This ballot measure proposes a modest 0.2% sales and use tax increase to strengthen public safety in the City of Fruita. Revenue will be divided equally between the Lower Valley Fire Protection District and the Fruita Police Department to ensure both fire and law enforcement services can keep pace with our community’s rapid growth.
Over the past year, fire emergency calls increased by 10% while staffing levels remained unchanged. At the same time, the City continues to experience significant residential and commercial growth. Without additional resources, our ability to respond quickly, maintain safe response times, and provide proactive fire prevention services will be strained.
This measure will fund the hiring of three additional Firefighter/EMTs and one Fire Inspector over the next five years, along with additional Police officers to support patrol operations, traffic safety, and animal control. It will also support recruitment and retention efforts to ensure we can attract and keep qualified public safety professionals.
Additionally, funds will be used for critical capital needs, including replacing aging fire apparatus—some now over 20 years old—and purchasing essential equipment for Fire, Police, and Emergency Services. Maintaining reliable, modern equipment is vital to protecting both residents and first responders.
If this measure does not pass, increased staffing will be delayed, aging apparatus replacement will be postponed, and our ability to safely manage community growth will be reduced.
This modest investment will help ensure Fruita remains a safe, well-protected community today and into the future. Supporting this measure is a vote for public safety, responsible growth, and continued protection for our residents, businesses, and visitors.
The Lower Valley Fire District Union Local 5265 is in favor of the ballot measure "Referred Measure A”.
